For the next few Saturdays—as I do a few odd reviews for the usual odd Saturday spot—I'll publish a list of the movies watched by various U.S. Presidents in the White House movie theater, a reconverted cloak room re-purposed during the Roosevelt (Franklin) Administration in which to watch films, host guests, have parties, a family den for the White House. A Man-Cave without any sort of nuclear ramifications.
The research was done by Gizmodo's Matt Walker, who gained access to the written notes of projectionist Paul Fischer.
Here is the list of films screened during the Administration of Ronald Reagan, as shown on the Ronald Reagan Library website. It's fascinating, because there are a LOT of them (Reagan was a film actor, after all, and there are some few instances where his films were screened—even Bedtime for Bonzo!—and I wonder if they screened Hellcats of the Navy—the only film he made with Nancy Reagan (stage name Nancy Davis)—on their anniversary. There are a couple instances where they watched the same movie two nights in a row, and I wonder if the first screening was interrupted by a crisis, or if they watched it again because the President fell asleep. Some of the ones they watched surprise—they watched Bloodline? (by choice?) The Fan? 'night, Mother? Jeez!—but the films are a good mix of new releases and old classics. Not a bad list, actually.
