For the next few Saturdays—as I do a few odd reviews for the usual "odd" Saturday spot—I'll publish a list of the movies watched by various U.S. Presidents in the White House movie theater, a reconverted cloak room re-purposed during the Roosevelt (Franklin) Administration in which to watch films, host guests, have parties, a family den for the White House. A Man-Cave without any sort of nuclear ramifications.
The Carter screenings are the usual eclectic mix of new and old—the pedigree of the old is slightly higher and often very surprising. Quite a few instances of Star Wars here—daughter Amy was in the White House, too—and the Carter's indulged in double-bills, sometimes (and even an instance of a triple-bill), and one night watched a double bill of American Graffiti and The Bridge on the River Kwai! That may not seem like much in the age of binge-watching, but it is quite an admirable marathon. He even watch Kurosawa's Kagemusha; thumb's up, for that.
Carter also had a predilection for silent movies (there was some question about the dates of some of the films, and I've edited towards leaning to the earlier, often silent versions—for instance, The Jazz Singer had to be the Al Jolson version as, at the time of the screening, the Neil Diamond film—anybody remember that?—had just finished being shot after a chaotic production).
The research was done by Gizmodo's Matt Walker, who gained access to the written notes of projectionist Paul Fischer.
Here is the list of films screened during the administration of James Earl "Jimmy" Carter Jr. (1977-1981).
